The Seasons of Fasting

This is the title of a short Old English poem about the times of the year that Christians should fast. The poem also talks about the abuses of the clergy and has been regarded as a very early vernacular example of satire directed against priests who did not live holy lives.

Where did the idea of "seasons of fasting" come from, and how did these three periods--Advent, Lent, and Pentecost--come to be the chief fasting periods of the medieval Church?.

What are the correspondences between these seasons and periods of fasting or feasting commemorated in early medieval non-Christian and/or classical cultures?
