IMAGE 1: A page of the Anglo-Saxon Herbal. The line between medicine and magic is quite blurred in the Middle Ages. Some herbs probably had medicinal effects, but it is difficult to tell which worked physically and which worked psychologically.

IMAGE 2: A recipe from the Anglo-Saxon Leechbook. The Leechbook ( "Healing Book" -- the Anglo-Saxon word "lęce" means physician or healing remedy and has nothing to do with invertebrate leeches) contains the recipes and remedies of an Anglo-Saxon physician. The remedies are a mixture of medicine, magic, and Christian piety. This page gives recipes for cough medicines and eye salves.
