From the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 888:
Beocca the Ealdorman took the donations of the West Saxons and of King Alfred
to Rome. And Queen Athelswith, who was King Alfred’s sister, went forth
(i.e., died), and her body lies at Pavia. And this same year Archbishop Athelred
and Ealdorman Athelwold passed away in one month.
From the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 889:
In this year there was no journey to Rome, exept by two messengers whom King
Alfred sent with writings (letters).
